Practically and contemporarily stated, politics is the idea that one can surrender one’s sovereignty to another person or group and not only will the loss of a God-given gift not be taken advantage of, but gain can come of it.
As it existed pre-Disney acquisition, The Star Wars Extended Universe was a vast collection of lore and mythos which comprised a portion of a universe, multiple races, cultures and languages and a deep history. The part of the universe ruled by The Galactic Empire had it’s capital on a planet called Coruscant. In lore, Coruscant had long been the socio-political center of the known galaxy and was so old, that the actual planet itself lay under 5,000 levels of strata which covered what remained of mountains and ancient oceans. The lower levels ranged from uninhabited zones of landfills and scrap heaps, up to dwellings of the poor underclass, up to entertainment districts and finally to the top where the ruling elite and foreign dignitaries practiced politics, religion and science with all the finest resources their wealth and influence could buy.
Complexity and richness of detail of this imagined universe make for fascinating research into what people working together can accomplish with their imagination and minds, but it does not make any of it real. Even though one knows it is fantasy it seems real because it draws from better known mythos, elements of our accepted history and rings of many truths that resonate with the core of our being. Similarly, politics draws from an ancient mythos whose core narrative is the liberation of the individual from no rule; chaos, to one form of oppressive rule to a supposed less oppressive rule. The current oppressive rule is justified as the best version of oppressive rule to emerge from the imperfection of imperfect people being ruled over by hopefully less imperfect people all just doing their best.
The modern era of The Galactic Empire in Star Wars was brought about through the staging of false catastrophes and a series of wars which painted the old government backed by the priest class as ineffective and branded the priest class as terrorists. The priest class being comfortable in their stature and overconfident in their power, could not detect the threat from within even training and helping to shape and create the motivation that would turn their best pupil into the high priest of the new party. This same deposed priest class would ultimately form a rebellion which would then take over political control from the previous regime. This struggle in the priest class was itself an age old power struggle of opposing ideologies that could not allow for compromise or synthesis; different poles of the same force.
Describing the modern era of the American Extended Political Universe is much more challenging as the narrative changes depending on which side one has made the symbolic sacrifice of their sovereignty to. The opposing sides; symbolized by red and blue parties synthesize to the purple of the force that holds the surrendered sovereignty. So long as there is apparent conflict, both sides assume they must be the dominant one to ensure not being overwhelmed by the other, thus validating that their is threat even if it is the unrecognized threat that the conflict starts from within and there can be no dominance without upsetting the whole. The metaphysical structure of the situation is not done justice by the clown-show pantomime that serves to publicly express it.
The high production value of Star Wars is a stark contrast to the poorer scripts and sullen visuals of modern politics which is perhaps what lends to the realism and broader accessibility. Sometimes described as acting for ugly people, politics produces people who can at both times be seen as relatable and a step more dignified than the common person if one can describe lying, lasciviousness, gluttony, grift, drug abuse, theft and cruelty as dignified behavior. It probably speaks to the audience seeing the politician as something they aspire to be, but still not being as poor as their most depraved failing. The poorly exercised narratives of stolen elections, insurrections, fake identities, body doubles, troubled families all provide distraction and obscure deeper truths.
Star Wars was and is a product of the entertainment industry, a business that provides distraction and serves to indoctrinate for whoever the indoctrinator is and whatever authority they wield to dictate what will be focused on and programmed into the viewer. The Star Wars Extended Universe is partially a fan extension which flushes out the details and expands the illusion farther and at lesser expense and in less time than a paid staff. The Star Wars Disney Universe is a jarring course change to what could have been a natural shift without the Extended Universe. Simply put, the industry is entertainment, but what about politics and specifically modern American politics?
The industry of politics is government, which is mind control(gubernare mente); the management of populations for those who benefit from the managed populations who when organized produce excess food, luxury items, skills and services. The form of the “ism” is wielded with varying degrees of threat and promise whereas the lack of the “ism” is outright threat. In American politics, the ideal of a Republic is the foundation of the narrative, but the managed population is largely ignorant of this. The perceived “ism” for most Americans is democracy where the majority rules. This belief is prevalent in a time when the majority is advocating for minority rights - being both ironic and ignorant. Politicians foster this confusion both encouraging the falsehood and amplifying the discord creating an exhausting pull to the extremes; creating a breaking point which will require a new resolution.
The idea of sovereignty itself indicates a God-given right to have agency over our actions, to pursue moral being and reap consequences of those actions. This includes the sovereign right to engage in partnership and dealings with others, assert fair and dignified discourse and reap the consequences of those actions. It also includes the sovereignty to enter into communities which allow for specialization of work and relying on others to fulfill roles for the good of the community. In the course of ones sovereign actions coming into contact with another, there is potential conflict and need for perspective and possibly mediation by a third party, and the role of government not only seeks to be that third party at all times but to dictate the actions and behaviors of the first and second party.
Loss of sovereignty directly legitimizes the abuse of power which will be forthcoming; one gives agency to their oppression when they no longer assert their rights. Along with anecdotes about the dead voting and the adage, “vote early and vote often” the idea that elections aren’t accurate are well known. There is an assumption that tampering, gerrymandering, vote harvesting and ballot dumping occur, but most people haven’t extrapolated a conclusion as to just how much. If one assumes other than elections being nothing more than a symbol of participation in a process they have no control or say in, they do not consider the complexity and manipulation inherent in the total production. Where government and politics step in to be the third party mediator and facilitator of commerce, they are the bully in disguise(or not).
There is no such thing as intelligent political discourse. There are 5,127 levels of strata on Coruscant at the top of which, representatives of The Galactic Senate of the New Republic of The Empire vote on policy for all the member worlds under the rule of Emperor Palpetine and his Sith apprentice, Darth Vader. In America, after the overthrow of a failed businessmen, adulterer, and reality TV star who was supported by the conservative and religious right who attempted an insurrection but politely stayed within the velvet ropes of the Capital Building; a new leader was chosen with severe dementia and multiple body doubles to restore dignity to the country. The creep who wants to molest his daughter got 12 million more votes than when he was elected, but still lost by 7 million votes to a pedophile who did molest his daughter. I wonder what kind of ice cream Emperor Palpetine liked, or what media outlet was his favorite.
